I am reading through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and am up to Joshua at the moment. Many times in these books God implores his people to look after the poor, the fatherless, the widow and the alien (from another country, not another planet). Deuteronomy 15:11 says There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded (generous) toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.
As you read this, 23 Million people are facing starvation in east Africa - that is almost the entire population of Australia. You might wonder what you can do to help. God doesn't ask us to single handedly solve world hunger, but he asks us to do what we can. The widow who gave two two small copper coins in Mark 12 was praised by Jesus because even though others gave much more, they only gave just part of their wealth. She gave all that she had. You are probably a broke student, but if we all give what we can, we can make a difference. You could be creative and raise money to donate to one of the many charities working in this area.
