1 Corinthians 13:1-2 says, I may speak in the languages of humans and of angels. But if I don’t have love, I am a loud gong or a clashing cymbal. I may have the gift to speak what God has revealed, and I may understand all mysteries and have all knowledge. I may even have enough faith to move mountains. But if I don’t have love, I am nothing. I may even give away all that I have and give up my body to be burned. But if I don’t have love, none of these things will help me.
The Corinthian church was hung up about spiritual gifts. Paul said that it doesn't matter which spiritual gift you have, if you don't have love, it means nothing. Sometimes we get hung up about things as well and forget about love.
Sometimes we do the right things for the wrong reason, we do them to be seen by others. Everything we do should be motivated by love. Do you raise your hands in worship so that you will look religious, or do you do it because you love Jesus? Are you putting money in the offering so that other people will see, or because you love Jesus?
Proverbs 16:2 says, People think that whatever they do is right, but the Lord judges their reason for doing it.
In Matthew 6:1 Jesus said, Be careful! When you do something good, don’t do it in front of others so that they will see you. If you do that, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
This week, stop and think about why you do what you do. Are you motivated by selfish reasons, or by love?
