Proverbs 12:26 says, Good people are careful about choosing their friends, but evil people always choose the wrong ones. Your friends play an important part in your life. I love the quote, show me your friends and I'll tell you your future. If you choose good friends, they will encourage you to be the best version of yourself. If you choose the wrong friends, you could get yourself into trouble. Do your friends encourage you in your faith, respect your beliefs, give good advice, help you when you're down? Are you a good friend?
Mary was so happy that God had chosen her to give birth to the Saviour of the world. God has a special job for you to do too. Ephesians 2:10 says, For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Before we were even born, God had plans for you.
Remember how excited you were when you were in primary school and the teacher gave you a special job, like class helper? You felt so important. God has a special job for you too. What good works do you think he wants you to do? If you're not sure yet, you can start by loving him and loving others. Proverbs 12:25 says, Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. We all know what it's like when you're having a bad day, when you're stressed or anxious - it weighs you down like a heavy backpack. It makes it hard to put one foot in front of the other and move from where you are. Anxiety is like that - it makes you feel heavy and weighed down. It makes it hard to move forward. But kind words can help lift you up, they encourage you. Sometimes critical words flow more naturally than kind ones. But if we are led by the Holy Spirit, if we read the Word, pray, and worship etc., kind words will come more easily. When you see someone who is struggling, think about what you would like someone to say to you if you were in their shoes. This week be generous with kind words and cheer people up rather than tearing them down.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, had just spoken to the angel at the empty tomb (hence their fear). They were happy because they had just found out that Jesus was alive. Happy is kind of an understatement here. The New King James Version says that they were filled with 'fear and great joy.' Imagine how happy you would be if someone you loved, who had died, came back to life! You would be shocked, surprised and deliriously happy. The Good News that Jesus rose again from the dead, and therefore we can spend eternity with him, should make us happy and fill us with great joy.
