Ephesians 5:4

When I was in high school my peers used to tell rude jokes and have crude discussions often. The temptation was to join in - it was funny after all. But Ephesians 5:4 says, Obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse joking are also out of place. Instead, give thanks. Paul had just been warning the Ephesian church about sexual immorality and impurity. In verse four he said we shouldn't even talk or joke about it either.

If you're a Christian you shouldn't join in with crude jokes and conversations. You shouldn't engage in foolish, pointless, or silly talk either. Your faith should be reflected in what you say. Paul says that we should give thanks instead.

(Ephesians 5 : 4 ,5) States :' Let there be no filthi ness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.'

ln this article the verse is nicely propounded.

This is one way of explanation with the consistent verses, about which things bring filthiness of the flesh & spirit _:

(Romans 8 :10) says,' And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.' And,

(James 1:14-15 ) says: 'Each person is tempted when he is lured & enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, & sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.'

For example,

Saul, the anointed king, by his own desire, spared the sheep & oxen to sacrifice to the Lord. God rejected him as king for this; as it was disobedience. (1 Samuel 15 )

lt is given in, (Rom. 8 :5_8) :For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life & peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.'

(Galatians 5 :17,19 -21) says : So I say, walk by the Spirit, & you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, & the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.They are
in conflict with each otherThe acts of the flesh are : sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery; sensuality,
idolatry & witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions & envy; drunkenness, orgies, & the like. I warn you,
as I did before, that those who live like this will not
inherit the kingdom of God.'

Meanings of the terms _:
###############

1) Sexual immorality_:

This often refers to sexual activity outside of marriage, including premarital sex, adultery, & homosexuality.

2) lmpurity and debauchery:

"Impurity" generally refers to the state of being unclean, either physically or morally. Debauchery" refers to extreme indulgence in immoral behaviors, often involving sex, drugs, or alcohol.

3) Sensuality :

lt signifies a preoccupation with or indulgence in physical pleasures, particularly those related to the senses, & frequently linked to sexual immorality.

4) Discord :
Discord refers to a lack of harmony or agreement, often leading to division & conflict.

5) Fits of rage :
Fits of rage" typically refers to uncontrolled outbursts of anger, a destructive force
that hinders relationships & can lead to harm.

6) Dissensions :
Dissensions" generally refer to disagreements, conflicts, or divisions that disrupt unity and harmony within a community, particularly among believers.

7) Orgies :

Orgies" primarily refers to , excessive, & often sexually immoral gatherings, often associated with pagan religious rituals & excessive indulgence.

8) Abominations & filthiness of fornication: (Rev.17: 4) (Fornication is the sexual intercourse between people not married to each other.i. e.
Filthiness in the skirts. (Lamentations 1:9)

( Mark 7 : 21-23) states :For from within, out of the
heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil
things come from within & defile the man.'

( Matthew 15 : 18 - 19) says:
' Those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; & they defile the man
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts,
murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness & blasphemies. '

ln (1 Peter 2:11 ) St. Paul says :Beloved, I urge you to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.'

In biblical context, "passions of the flesh" refers to the intense desires & emotions stemming from our human nature.( Ephesians 2:3 )

(1 Corinth.6 :9,10,18) states :'ldolaters, adulterers, men who practice homosexuality, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, swindlers will not
inherit the kingdom of God.'

(Matthew 5:32 ) states :Everyone who divorces his
wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery & whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.' And,

(2 Corinthians 6:14 ) states :'Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.'

(1 Corinth 10 : 20-21) says :Ye should not have fellow ship with devils.Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord & the cup of devils.'

( 2 Corinthians 7:1) states :'Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh & spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.'

According to (lsaiah 64:6):'We are all an unclean thing, & all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; & we all do fade as a leaf; & our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.'
