Eggs have been a symbol of new life since ancient times and have been associated with Spring (which is when Easter occurs in the Northern Hemisphere). The earliest eggs would have been dyed hen or duck eggs. It wasn't until the 1870s that chocolate eggs became popular in Europe. These would have been solid eggs. Most Easter eggs are hollow now and Christians claim that they represent the empty tomb. So basically, Easter eggs originated in pagan celebrations and the church has added its own meaning to them.
