There was no donkey!!! Luke 2:2-4 says, Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Mary and Joseph travelled on a donkey. The two towns were about 130 kilometres apart so hopefully they didn't walk. Other popular methods of transport at the time were horses, camels or carts pulled by an animal.
This appearance of a donkey in the Christmas story hardly detracts from the message of the of the gospel. There are other additions to our Christmas celebrations that can detract from Jesus, such as Santa Claus, elves, gift-giving, reindeer, and Christmas trees. Don't get sidetracked by secular additions to Christmas—make sure your celebrations focus on Jesus.
