This statement from Colossians 3:18 is very controversial and often taken out of context. I must admit, that I struggled with it when I was younger. Marriage is like a road trip only one person can drive the car. You both plan the trip together, but ultimately, only one of you can drive. This doesn't mean that you are a door mat. Verse 19 says, Husbands love your wives and never treat them harshly. A similar pass in Ephesians 5:25 says, For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her. You might think that it is difficult to submit to someone, but to love someone like Christ loved the church (he died for her), that is definitely a harder task.

I made this cute Bible Verse art with a $2 photo frame from K-Mart. I took out the glass and put in some black card then attached some string and wooden pegs (also from K-Mart). You can either handwrite your own Bible Verses or print some out on a computer. I cheated and used Word to print mine on some scrap paper from K-Mart.
I recently visited the beautiful Karijini National Park in the north of Western Australia for a couple of days and had an enforced digital detox due to the lack of a phone signal or wi-fi. It was kind of isolating at first but it's good for the soul to put down our devices and get out in nature. It's also an apt reminder that there are places on this vast planet that you can not get a phone signal, but you are never out of range of God. Psalm 139:7-10 says,
Your Spirit is everywhere I go. I cannot escape your presence. If I go up to heaven, you will be there. If I go down to the place of death, you will be there. If I go east where the sun rises or go to live in the west beyond the sea, even there you will take my hand and lead me. Your strong right hand will protect me Matthew 6:25-34 is part of the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus was instructing his followers not to worry about what they will eat or drink or wear (we'll call them the cares of the world). A modern paraphrase of this passage could be, Do not worry about what you will wear, whether you have the latest iPhone, what university you will go to and what degree you will study, if you will get a job, the guy you will date and one day marry, where you will live, your weight, hair colour or style...
Verses 33-34 say, But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. I like the way the Contemporary English Version puts it: But more than anything else, put God's work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well. Don't worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself. You have enough to worry about today. |
