Sythia is a 17 year old Compassion sponsor child in Kenya. Along with four of her peers she developed an app for mobile phones that has a panic button girls can press to alert authorities that they are at risk of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation). This is a cultural practice that is illegal but still carried out on about a quarter of all Kenyan women. The app also has resources for girls who have already undergone the ritual.
The girls were invited to Google headquarters where they participated in the 2017 Technovation challenge. They came second and won $10,000 to develop their app. Thanks to her sponsorship Synthia can go to school and has access to computers at the Compassion centre. You may wonder how your small contribution helps but her family of 13 survives on $2 Australian dollars per day. In the book of Matthew a rich man came to Jesus and asked what he must do to get eternal life. Jesus said, If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. You can read more about Synthia at https://www.compassion.com.au.

I had the privilege of hearing this guy speak this week and his story is powerful. As a child he was sponsored by a 15 year old girl who took a babysitting job to pay for his sponsorship. It's one month until the 40 Hour Famine and this year it looks a little different. In 2017 World Vision are reimagining the 40 Hour Famine as a 40 hour Backpack challenge. Basically, you live out of a backpack for 40 hours to raise money for refugee and displaced children. Globally there are more than 65 million people who have had to flee their homes due to conflict. Find out more information and sign up online here.
World Vision is a Christian aid organisation. Each year they take youth ambassadors on a trip to a third world country. Last year they visited India. Here is 18 year old Lisa Luce's experience. You can find out more information here. I am reading through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and am up to Joshua at the moment. Many times in these books God implores his people to look after the poor, the fatherless, the widow and the alien (from another country, not another planet). Deuteronomy 15:11 says There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded (generous) toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.
As you read this, 23 Million people are facing starvation in east Africa - that is almost the entire population of Australia. You might wonder what you can do to help. God doesn't ask us to single handedly solve world hunger, but he asks us to do what we can. The widow who gave two two small copper coins in Mark 12 was praised by Jesus because even though others gave much more, they only gave just part of their wealth. She gave all that she had. You are probably a broke student, but if we all give what we can, we can make a difference. You could be creative and raise money to donate to one of the many charities working in this area. I have listed some below: Red Cross Unicef Care Baptist World Aid |
