Once again, sorry if you're not a footy fan - insert your favourite sport or pastime here. Did I mention my AFL team won the grand final this week? They got there through a lot of sacrifice and hard work. These guys eat healthily, train six days a week, don't drink during the season and are supported by personal trainers, doctors, physios, sports psychologists and other professionals. Football is their life.
Being a Christian is not a spectator sport - we need to live like it's a contest we can win. We need to watch what we consume (television, internet, music etc), train (go to church, Bible Study, Youth Group) and surround ourselves with people who can help (pastors, mentors etc.). In Ephesians 6:18 Paul instructs us to pray for the Christians. In verse 19 Paul says, Also pray for me - that when I speak, God will give me words so that I can tell the secret truth about the Good News without fear. This verse might give us an idea of what to pray for when we are praying for other Christians - that God will help them to tell other people about the Good News of Jesus.
Why is it important to pray for Christians?
Sorry if you're not a footy fan - insert your favourite sport instead. My team won the Australian Rules Football grand final this weekend. Everyone knows that I'm a West Coast Eagles supporter because I wear their colours, I sing their song, I boast about them, I go to their games...
Hopefully people know I'm on Team Jesus too because of the what I say and do. I go to church and Bible Study, I talk about what I believe, I listen to Christian music, I read my Bible... Is it obvious to other people that you're on Team Jesus too or is it something you try to keep quiet? At the end of verse 38 Jesus says that if we are ashamed of him, "I will be ashamed of you when I come with the glory of my Father and the holy angels." |
