Colossians 4:2 says devote yourselves to prayer. Paul prayed passionately for the churches he planted and visited. We should pray for the church globally. Sythia is a 17 year old Compassion sponsor child in Kenya. Along with four of her peers she developed an app for mobile phones that has a panic button girls can press to alert authorities that they are at risk of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation). This is a cultural practice that is illegal but still carried out on about a quarter of all Kenyan women. The app also has resources for girls who have already undergone the ritual.
The girls were invited to Google headquarters where they participated in the 2017 Technovation challenge. They came second and won $10,000 to develop their app. Thanks to her sponsorship Synthia can go to school and has access to computers at the Compassion centre. You may wonder how your small contribution helps but her family of 13 survives on $2 Australian dollars per day. In the book of Matthew a rich man came to Jesus and asked what he must do to get eternal life. Jesus said, If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. If you go a sporting event or a concert you see thousands of people yelling, singing, jumping around and raising their hands. When you go to church on Sunday, you may see a lot of people who are relatively unenthusiastic in their praise of the Creator of the Universe and Saviour of the World. According to 2 Samuel 6:14, David returned the Ark (the Ark of the Covenant which symbolised the presence of God) to Jerusalem. He was so excited he was dancing before the Lord with all his might. Dancing was a usual expression of rejoicing, but it was only done by the women. David didn't care what everyone else thought. Is your praise inhibited by worrying about what other people think?
People are like balloons and God is like helium gas. When we are full of God's Holy Spirit we can soar to amazing heights. When we are not full of his Holy Spirit we can do very little at all. So often I find that I am full of myself and what I want, full of complaining, anger, envy, greed... when I should be full of the Holy Spirit and grace, love, forgiveness, generosity, peace, joy... Ephesians 3:16-19 says, I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
