The Good Book Company produces Engage, a devotional book for teenagers. You can buy it in print or electronic version. You can even download a free sampler with studies on Ruth and Titus. The studies include a daily Bible reading, information to help you understand the basics of the Bible and questions to make you dig deeper. They deal with real, relevant and sometimes tricky topics. Check it out here.
I think God is trying to tell me something because this topic keeps coming up - that we need to put our phones down and connect with people face to face. I read this great article at Hope Media by Elaine Fraser about how moments of meaningful connection that happen in person that can't be replicated on Facebook. So, scroll less and show up more. Say hi to the person next to you on the bus, talk to your friends and find out how they're really going, spend time engaging with your family talking or playing a board game, talk to your teachers and ask them how they're going (wait till they're sitting down first or they might fall over)... You can read the full article here.
A friend of mine died of Cancer this week and it prompted me to ask the question again, "Why does God let bad stuff happen?" The short answer is that sin entered the world when Adam and Eve sinned and it has been a broken place ever since.
Let me try and explain it like this - it's a bit like cooking a cake. You mix the flour, sugar, milk, egg and butter together, put it in the oven and it's perfect. But, if you put a cup of dirt in when you add the flour and mixed it all up and put it in the oven, the whole cake is ruined. There are a lot of good things in the world (it was all good when God created it), but sin affects everything in the world. People get sick, people die, people hurt each other, people get divorced... There is hope though. When Jesus comes again, he will restore the earth to its perfect state. 2 Peter 3:13 says, God has promised us a new heaven and a new earth, where justice will rule. We are really looking forward to that! This song is Emma's story of how she became a Christian, "It tells a story that very much reflects my own: a story of someone completely lost and broken, and needing Jesus, and Him coming and invading their world right here, right now."
You can read more here. Homemade cards mean so much more than store bought ones. I used supplies from K-Mart to make this card for my Mum for Mother's Day. The Bible verse was printed on craft paper. I already had the flowers and brad in my craft supplies. You could use include a photo of yourself, use stickers, charms, buttons, ribbon etc to decorate your card - the sky is the limit.
I was thinking about my Mum this week and reflecting on all the things I admire about her.
She reminds me of the Proverbs 31 woman: Proverbs 31:20 She always gives to the poor and helps those who need it. Proverbs 31:25-30 She is a strong person and people respect her. She looks to the future with confidence. She speaks with wisdom and teaches others to be loving and kind. She overseas the care of her house. She is never lazy. Her children say good things about her. Her husband brags about her and says, "There are many good women, but you are the best." Grace and beauty can fool you, but a woman who respects the Lord should be praised. |
