The Hillsong blog has a list of 99 reasons why you should go to church. Here are ten of my favourites:
1. The Bible says you should (Hebrews 10:25) 2. You can worship God 3. It will help you understand the Bible 4. It helps you to be in the world, but not of it 5. Because gathering strengthens your faith 6. It will help you re-order your priorities 7. It honours God 8. You will be loved 9. You can love others 10. It will remind you that you're not alone. You can read the other 89 here. Frogs never close their eyes, even when they sleep. Matthew 46:21 says, "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." Temptation is all around us, the temptation to eat too much, go out drinking with your friends (even though you are underage, date that guy that you know is all wrong, post that picture that is slightly suggestive... If the frog gets lazy or complacent, he may find himself as someone's dinner. If you don't keep watch, you may find yourself in a sticky situation.
I was walking my dog this morning and looked up at the very cloudy and overcast sky. I noticed a tiny patch of blue shining through a gap in the clouds and was reminded that behind the clouds is a lovely sunny blue sky. Clouds come and go but the blue sky is always there - sometimes you just can't see it. In life, troubles come but they don't last forever and God is always there, even though we can't see Him. 2 Corinthians 4:17 says, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory which far outweighs them all." In other words, the troubles in our life will not last forever and are part of our journey. They also pale into insignificance when compared to eternal life with Christ.
Scripture Union has a good article on How to Read the Bible. You can read it in full here. These suggestions are inspired by that article:
1. Pray before you read your Bible - that God would help you to understand and receive it; 2. Get a translation that you understand - there are lots to choose from; 3. Find a Bible reading plan or study guide that suits you - you can download Bible guides from Scripture Union for a small charge. 4. Don't give up - sometimes it's hard going but then you'll have a great revelation. |
